I remember William’s excitement as the colorful stamps he was selecting/ordering began to arrive, and he spent a lot of time categorizing them. At a certain point, he felt fortunate to be able to shift everything over to Lucy and Rez’s barn. He was able to spread everything out in a much more workable, friendly way… I remember sitting there, watching him work with patience and determination, and did not fully comprehend the level of detail until I arrived [in San Francisco] for the [sixtieth] birthday celebration and it was not yet complete. He set me up at the apartment, and set me to working. I recall being so nervous that I would spill the glue or create some kind of scene, and fortunately none of that happened. It was also an honor to work on it — how lovely it was to see it on display. Another piece of William’s creative brilliance, shining forth. —Martha Flanders
