Early Work

Ten Zillion
1979
Text by Stevie Wonder
Pen, Ink and gouache on paper

William considered this piece as marking his first significant moment as a serious calligrapher. It was created at Reed College, and was stolen from a group show there. He chose the text for the adjoining N and Z letterforms — their shape essentially identical but rotated 90 degrees. He estimated the piece was approximately 40” wide.
