Gay Freedom Day

William arrived in San Francisco in the late 1970s during one of the most formative periods in the evolution of queer counterculture. He played an active and creative role in the community during the first decades of gay liberation.

In the photo above, he appears as a sexy devil mocking the homophobic religious rhetoric of the era, questioning capitalism along with his friend Gilbert Baker (credited for being one of the creators of the Pride Flag) who appears as the skeleton of Uncle Sam in an early Gay Freedom Day Parade.
