Sixtieth Birthday Celebration
Written By Allison Wyper
William celebrated his sixtieth birthday in May 2011 with a huge gathering in San Francisco, with both West Coast and East Coast friends attending.
The main event featured his just-finished stamp art triptych, which he titled Evidence of Elsewhere. Three black fabric panels were covered with thousands of stamps, creating an impressionistic color wash.
On another wall were “Envelopes to Friends,” showing some of his beautifully calligraphed envelopes with color-matching stamps received by beloveds. Following a catered dinner, William sang a set of Russian songs, and dancing completed the evening.
